You want a secure environment for your kiddos. I've seen all kinds of straps, poles, and contraptions to keep the kids in the box. Most common are poles through a hole on each side of the box, secured with cotter pins. But if you line up next to each other, it's hard to slide it out.
My first attempt was to attach the pole to the front of the box with a hinge, and a gate lock. I also created some seat belts using nylon straps and the clasps.

It worked pretty well for front loading, but the hinge had issues with the weight. Plus the kids liked to climb up themselves after awhile. So I permanently mounted it and created straps to make sure they didn't slide underneath.
In 2014, I swapped from seat belts to just a single strap between the legs. I made three so if only one child was up there, she could sit in the middle.
